dynamic typography

These are my initial ideas for Dynamic Typography. The project is that we have to use the letters of a word to express the word. The word itself has to be an emotion... Here are my ideas!

^ Logophobic.

^ Inadequate.

^ Stubborn.

Fall Movie Preview

So... after reading the most recent 'Entertainment Weekly' and doing my fair share of browsing through Apple Trailers, I've complied a list of fall movies that I'm dying to see.

10. Balls of Fury - Aug 29th

9. I am Legend - Dec 14th

8. Hannah Takes the Stairs - Aug 22nd

7. The Golden Compass - Dec 7th

6. 30 Days of Night - Oct 19th
Vampires!!

5. Superbad - Aug 17th (today!)

4. Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium - Nov 16th

3. Wristcutters - Oct 17th

2. Across the Universe - Sept 14th

1. Sweeney Todd - Dec 21st
OMG! All my favorite actors/actresses is a sweet musical movie. Not to mention, it's hard not to love a Tim Burton film when it has Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, and Sasha Baron Cohen! Fuck yes.

music videos & jason arena

I have two music videos worth putting on here at the moment. The first doesn't have a youtube link, so I can't embed it. It's Bjork's video 'I miss you'.

Bjork - I miss you

It was given to me by Randy first, and then Chris gave me the larger version. It's where my facebook picture came from... if any of you are questioning.

The second:

Thanks Teo!

And the last link for today is Jason Arena's blog. He's my professor at school and the work on here is amazing. The things I am most impressed by is student work - stuff that I will be doing in less than a year. OMG.

the art of erased motion

Blu's Wall Animation uses an unusual style of animation where each frame is drawn on a wall, and then erased, and works its way around all walls in the room. I remember seeing the first artist that did this in my Drawing I class with Margret Pence. I'll admit, I enjoyed it - however this one is far more entertaining.

Also, Bren-dogz showed me this link today - wicked sweet. Inspiration worthy? I believe so! Flickermood Thanks Sam!

model slash actor; and not the other way around

Being the die-hard lover of Zoolander - this highly amused me: Designer//Slash//Model
If the whole modeling for the MTV Store had come through - this totally could have been me! Or maybe if I had been able to go to the model call for the hair cutting place... It's all good. Modeling has passed me by and I think I'm better for it - haha.

Another cool link is from my home area: The Soft Shock of the New
Her design-y art of the new represents mind maps through bold block of color looking similar to jellyfish. It's pretty sweet, I highly recommend.

In other news, I finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It was amazing. I won't say anything in fear that I might ruin the ending for someone... but it's the best book I've read in awhile. At work the other day we discovered that my generation is the Harry Potter generation. It came out when we were 10 and finished now at the ripe age of 20. I can't wait for the movies to come out, but I highly doubt they'll be anywhere near as good as the books. The amusement park will be out when I graduate, and I will be there. As much of a dork as I truly am, I'm getting Jon to burn the 7th book onto CD for me so I can listen to Jim Dale describing what happened. He is such a talented voice actor!

I might go see Sunshine in the near future. Everyone's reviews have sounded like this: it is visually beautiful, but the plot is the plot and there are no twists or turns. Most people have said that if I enjoyed Red Eye, then I would enjoy Sunshine. I mostly want to see it because Cillian Murphy is a hot piece of ass. ;) But that's just me.

what could be better than pulp fiction and typography

when creativity strikes - never second guess

I was sitting on the longest bus ride ever this morning and to my surprise - I didn't get annoyed at the traffic, or the bus driver that kept stopping to tell people he couldn't fit anymore people and proceeded to fight with the ever growing line, or even that fact that the previous night I had slipped the ending of The Half-Blood Prince to my roommate who apparently didn't know it already. -.-* Instead, I was inspired just looking out the window listening to my old music that I still haven't moved off my iPod... sometime horrible music is still good.

My first idea is for a motion graphics piece - maybe for a show opening. It's pictures taken with polaroids that move through a landscape. They have an amazing un-perfectness to them. It would work well with film that bounced in and out of perfection. Strangely enough, the song I was listening to was not the one that worked so well with the idea... on the bus home I listened to Cities of Foam - Out of Reach. It has a good 45 sec at the beginning and 15 at the end.

My 2nd idea is Faces in Machines. It's something I see all the time... and why not do some photography / vector art to go with it? I really want to do something with the fans in my roommate's car... and cars, and coffee makers. :) I really want to do some screen printing when we get back. I'm going to make the 'stencil' artwork for it this summer, perhaps this week when I'm listening to Harry Potter. We have a scanner at work - which will work nicely.

I also like these graffiti pieces....

the beauty of HD

We had an acclaimed cinematographer come in to speak to us at work today. His name is Noah David Smith... and his website link ( Click here! ) has most of his work.

He loves traditional film, but is big on experimenting with HD. He puts lenses over the HD camera to either make it look more like film or experiment with completely new techniques. VH1 is excited because they will most likely be getting HD camera in the near future. If RIT got them I think I would cream myself.

I've decided that I really want to experiment with film when I get back to school. I don't even have a regular camera here, so I have to wait for school to be artsy. :/

what the font?!

What the font?

This is the coolest website for anybody looking for a font they've seen somewhere else... or is trying to match a font on an existing project that they've already 'created the outlines' on.

London's Calling

My boss just came back from London and brought back some really cool stuff. The first is the Tate show... which was, in her words, amazing. The artwork is really cool, but my favorite pieces are all the old 1950s photos.
Tate Online

The next London link... is a motion graphics firm Airside, that did the cutest animation for Live Earth (that was awesome even though apparently the concert sucked). We get to watch it tomorrow during lunch, so I'll update with my review rather than my bosses. Maybe I can work there next summer?

the qualms of designing in a new age

"In my experience there are two types of designers, there are those that pass themselves off as designers, but are really just artworkers who can copy stuff. They're pack followers, and although their work may evolve, it is shallow and doesn't break any new ground. Then there are real designers, the ones with talent and ideas, who get inspired by things-art, architecture, photography, film, innovative products, nature, anything really. They adapt and change through experimentation."
- Jay Armitage

If you're a designer, illustrator, painter, film-maker... any kind of artist - you've had this debate. In fact, you've probably had it a million times between peers and hear about it in every art history class you've sat down and didn't fall asleep for. Originality. Creativity. Inspiration. Break-though art is art that is completely new, original, inspirational... but in an age of repeats, how can a designer break through?

In order to be successful in the commercial art field, you need to do something close to what is popular at the moment - but drastically different to make it rise above the rest. It's a hard line to walk on and not get trampled by copy-cat artists. Everything starts looking the same, but they all claim to be original.
Worse, what if the style that is popular now is the one you truly enjoy? Force yourself into something different to break the mold or hold on to what you love. Then... do you love it because your brain-washed to love it because you see it everywhere, or do you actually love it? As a friend once told me "if you get too caught up in replication, you can find yourself in a ditch".

The experimental art field has it's qualms as well. Is it crap or is it art? I mean, there are points in our culture where crap could literally be art, so how do we know what is break-through and inspirational or, well, not? Every designer who takes classes and learns the rules slowly becomes more warped into what is good and what isn't because they follow the rules or because they break them effectively. It just feels like the more you learn, the bigger a nay-sayer you become. Every piece of art becomes what somebody else, whom you admire, claims as 'good or not'. Art is subjective. So if you do something you love, then isn't it good enough?

Going into my junior year of college, this is my qualm. I love and am proud of what I do, but I want to get better and evolve. I want to have a style that's all my own and love it for what it is. I feel like now I'm just dicking around and amusing myself with things I think are funny, but they're shallow. When I used to be more of a fine artist, I would always spend the longest time just coming up with a reason to do what I was going to do. If the reason wasn't good enough, didn't say what I wanted it to say, wasn't 'deep' enough - then I would just throw it away. I miss feeling like that about my work, but I feel like it's a mirror of my life at the moment. I create my best work when my emotions are haywire... if I'm just kind of living through the strides of everyday life, then my artwork reflects that. Having up, down, and straight periods just happen - it's a part of life. I feel as though my artwork is more original and inspiring during emotional periods, and becomes more copy-cat(ish) when I'm striding. Hence trying to break out of the stride.

My biggest obstacle to overcome in the upcoming year is the one that will be forced most heavily. Competition. Rochester Institute of Technology thrives on competition. It becomes a completely uncontrollable blind-fold if you let it. Everyone wants to be 'top-of-the-class', everyone wants to move onto the best firms out there, be better than their enemies, be better than their friends... be the best. I know that I need to break way from the competitive feelings, and go more towards experimentation and truly loving what I'm doing, not what the rest of the class is. It will be hard, but this blog is my first step towards it.

high intake design on no time

I'm a new media design & imaging junior at RIT and I've created this blog to house everything that inspires me. Whether it be motion graphics, films, animations, illustrations, bands, music, websites - whatever, you'll find it here. The best part about the internet is that there is bound to be someone out there that finds the same things interesting that you do... so here is my declaration to anyone who cares to read. Please comment, critique, and enjoy.

Hey, it's better than sending millions of e-mails to yourself.
